Walter Hallam - His life

On his COPY Birth Certificate says Father is a Coalminer, Hewer (from Cotmanhay, Ilkeston)
Residence & Born =121, Highbury Road, Nottingham.

Grandad (William Herbert Hallam) lived with his Grandma Woolley, then with Uncle Herbert Woolley and his family at "Llandrillo", 156, Hassock lane, Shipley.
He went to school at Bennerley School, Cotmanhay, Ilkeston.

I was told (Grandma & Woolleys)that his brother Aurthur was brought up in Hand & Heart Pub or Bridge Inn, Bridge St in Cotmanhay. (Now believed to be possibly the Rose & Crown!! found out relations). Later he married with children, and died down the pit? have not found out any further information an Arthur Hallam.

Quotation (from Woolleys 2003) "It was said Grandad came in and said he was getting married tommorrow (to Olive Smith). Some said he had to, but that wasn't correct!". They were believed to have lived with her parents in Stanton, Ilkeston (shop?).

He left school at 14, and worked at the Stanton Iron Works as a Grinder. Later he used to bike it from Aspley to Stanton to work.
He then met Frances Pam Crowder in a Nottingham centre pub. They married 26 March 1938 at the Nottingham Registry Office.

He did his National Service in World War 2, serving abroad. First with the Sherwood Foresters as a searchlight, then the Artillery, then abroad with the Black Watch. First 2 regiments, he was with Jack Crowder (Pams Brother). Grandad and Jack were posted to Sunk Island, nr Patrington, nr Hull. Grandma went to stay with Franks Wife working as a land girl.

They Lived at 177, Broxtowe lane and 68, Bideford Road, Aspley. Then 13, Aslockton Drive, Nottingham.
He worked at the George Hotel, George St, Nottingham. He eventaully came the Head Porter. Retired at 65. He then continued to work for a sheet metal company as a driver, until his health deteriated with his age.
