England was a Catholic country until Henry VIII founded the Church of England. He founded the Church of England because the Pope would not annul his marriage to Katherine of Aragon. The grounds were that Katherine had already been espoused to his brother, Arthur, so Henry felt the marriage should be annulled because it never should have taken place. That it was just Henry's ruse to dispose of his wife so he could take another, is beside the point. The Pope would not grant the annulment. So Henry divorced Katherine by civil law, by which his daughter, Mary, was declared illegitimate, and Henry became Head of the Church of England, just as the Queen is today.
